Betteravia Farm

Betteravia Farm, also known as Bonipak Produce Inc, is located in Santa Maria and has been family owned and operated since 1932. The founders settled in Santa Maria because they knew its rich soil and favorable climate would be perfect for year round growing. Indeed, today, the farm has more than 600 employees and their produce can be found at local supermarkets. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the company has continued to grow, harvest, and ship fresh vegetables to customers and consumers across the U.S. and Canada.

The farm sells conventional, organic, and pre-packaged, ready to enjoy products. Some of their produce include organic, conventional, and pre-packaged cauliflower, as well as organic and conventional romaine lettuce. The farm’s marketing coordinator shared that he likes to mash the cauliflower and his favorite ways to use romaine hearts are to toss together a salad, or grill them.

Betteravia Farm has also established a seed to sale process. It begins from the planning stage where customer needs are addressed and product modifications are made accordingly. Then, only the highest quality seeds are chosen from the R & D process, which are later nurtured into seedlings. The farm also uses the latest GPS technology and drip irrigation, combined with their 85 years of farming experience, to plant the best crops possible. When it comes time to harvest, worker and food safety come first. They also have a cooling facility near the farm to ensure freshness and proper storage of all of their produce. Lastly, Betteravia Farm’s products are shipped and sold to retailers, wholesalers, and food service customers throughout the United States and even the world.

Betteravia Farm has always taken on the responsibility of ensuring sustainability and food safety in the work that they do. They are constantly finding ways to reduce their water usage and are committed to making sure their soil continues to be rich for generations to come. Next time you’re at the supermarket, look for Bonipak’s items, knowing that it is fresh and of high quality, but best of all, that it comes from the Central Coast.

Sincerely,

Emily & Talia

About Us:

Welcome! We are so glad you are here. This site was inspired by our desire to help local farmers and business owners on the Central Coast get through this difficult time. We began this project in April 2020 when we were freshmen at San Luis Obispo High School, enrolled in an agriculture biology class, which requires a project related to agriculture every trimester. We have continued this project throughout our time in high school.

We hope our time aids in shining a light on local farmers and business owners on the Central Coast while significantly decreasing the amount of wasted food.

Additioanlly, we'd like to thank our agriculture teachers Mrs. Bates and Mrs. Evans for their continued support.
