Shanley Farm

Shanley Farms is run by a father and daughter team with the intention to spread delicious and new food. 10 years after Jim Shanley planted avocados in Morro Bay, California, his daughter, Megan, joined the team and became a key function in the company that it has become. In 2011, Megan and Jim purchased 62 acres in Visalia, which would become the home to

  • Avocados,

  • Oranges,

  • Limes,

  • Kiwis,

  • And finger limes.

Today, the team continues to sell these crops in addition to goji berries, viola figs, passion fruit, dragon fruit, and coffee to restaurants, retailers, and bars. Shanley Farm’s main crop is finger limes. Originally from Australia, the microcitrus adds a unique citrus flavor to anything you put it on. To use it, simply cut the lime open and squeeze the pearls onto your plate! When I spoke with Megan, she said she loves to make coconut, cucumber, and finger lime popsicles. It’s very simple. You combine coconut water, a cucumber, and citriburst pearls, then divide the mixture into popsicle molds, and freeze. It sounds delicious! “It takes anything from ordinary to extraordinary.”

During the coronavirus, Shanley Farms has anticipated that they are losing revenue due to their small avocados. Usually, the small avocados are shipped to restaurants and most restaurants are closed; whereas their larger avocados are sent to stores and continue to be purchased. In addition to this, Shanley Farms has been sending extra fruit to food service distributions that serve homes. Additionally, when the finger limes are in season, they are shipped directly to homes. For more information on how you can purchase their products, email info@shanleyfarms.com, or call (805) 323.6525.

Shanley Farms is taking advantage of growing unique fruits and introducing them to people who are willing to expand their taste buds and experience something not only new and exciting, but delicious! If you support this local farm, Emily and I would love to hear what you made. About Us:

Welcome! We are so glad you are here. This site was inspired by our desire to help local farmers and business owners on the Central Coast get through this difficult time. We began this project in April 2020 when we were freshmen at San Luis Obispo High School, enrolled in an agriculture biology class, which requires a project related to agriculture every trimester. We have continued this project throughout our time in high school.

We hope our time aids in shining a light on local farmers and business owners on the Central Coast while significantly decreasing the amount of wasted food.

Additioanlly, we'd like to thank our agriculture teachers Mrs. Bates and Mrs. Evans for their continued support.
